X is for X Marks the Spot

Shiny New Idea alert! Shiny New Idea alert!!!! A completely intoxicating new idea has worked its way into my mind and I've spent the last few days plotting.

Maybe it's because the book is about a thirteen-year-old boy, or maybe it's because it's about buried treasure, but my son was so excited about the idea that he actually sat with me for hours brainstorming.

There's not much more helpful to me than being able to bounce ideas off of someone else while brainstorming. Talking through a plot feels a little like digging up gold. With each new idea, I go a little deeper. And like real digging, it's always nice to be able to hand the shovel off to someone else.

Do you like to brainstorm out loud?

  1. Congrats on the new idea!

Depending on what I'm working on, I do sometimes like to brainstorm out loud. Every once in a while, I'll ask my husband for his thoughts on a poetic image in order to see if what's in my mind is translating to paper.

    Have fun with the brainstorming!

  2. I love brainstorming out loud. My family has been a constant source of invaluable sounding-boards/brainstorming sessions!

  4. I never used to brainstorm out loud - with another person, that is, I always talk to myself out loud, though. :) But lately I've been doing a little more of that and it's fun. Good luck with your new idea!

  5. Ooo - sounds like a great new idea! I'm stuck on the same idea right now, trying to revise. But I love when a new idea comes into mind and I have time to pursue it!

  6. I always carry a voice recorder when I'm on my 4-mile jog. Something about the legs pumping really pumps out the thoughts as well, and if I don't speak them out loud and save them in a recorder, I'll have forgotten some of them by the time I reach home an hour later. But yes, I guess I do brainstorm out loud and have been doing it for three years.

Stopping by from the A-Z. It's been a great blogging month.

  7. Brainstorming out loud is rather fun! Pirates and buried treasure must have been fun to chat about.

  8. I have brainstormed aloud before (most likely made people think I was off my rocker). I have talked about my plot ideas with my dad. He is always a listening ear and asks questions that can help make my stories better.

You have a champion of a son! Good for him for helping out his mum.

  9. What a lovely header on your website -- very creative! Re brainstorming, I actually do best simply writing at the computer. But I'm thrilled for you that you found "x marks the spot" and a new idea for a new writing project. Persevere! What a neat project to do with your 13-year-old. Best, Beth

  10. It's fantastic that you have a son who's the same age as the mc. That gives you such insight. I hope your shiny new idea turns out to be a keeper! :-)
