Music Time Machine

Okay, so maybe I haven't really invented a time machine, but every once in a while I'll stumble upon a song that comes pretty close to transporting me back in time. I'm sure that there are times in our lives when our souls our more raw, easier to imprint on, when a song or a smell can suddenly become the conduit for all sorts of emotions.

Yesterday I saw a link to the top 100 songs of 1993 and was amazed at how viscerally my body reacted to just reading the titles. There were so many of them that filled me with the most strange mix of longing and a magical hope for the future. If I could bottle what it felt like to be a teenage girl, that would be it...

What songs take you back in time?

  1. Love this post! I was just talking to someone the other day and we were remembering how we both had the cassette tapes for the soundtracks to "Footloose" and "Dirty Dancing" and how we knew all the words.... :)

  3. Seriously! Songs influence my memories more than anything else. I was watching THE VOICE with my 16-yr-old daughter, and they did an old Phil Collins song. I was thrown back to when I was my daughter's age, and my stomach knotted as I pictured the boy I was dating when that song was popular, and how he sang it to me and how his lips curled ... oh sigh ...

  4. I'm brought back to my senior year in high school (1990—yikes!) whenever I hear our class song, Skid Row's "I Remember You." Actually, hearing any music from high school takes me back. :)

Now I'm off to listen to some Skid Row...

  5. I am also transported easily by music. Van Morrison always brings me to driving in the Smoky Mountains. And Bon Iver is my trip through the Redwoods. But Lenny Kravitz takes me straight to high school. I was head over heels and ready to go his way :)

  6. Lots of songs bring me back to those years. Extreme had an album that always reminds me of driving w/my friend to see her boyfriend-who lived 45 miles away. Good times. :)

  7. Anything from the 70's. There, I'm showing my age. Just finding your blog through another one. Really like your art. Do you do book covers? My WIP is not finished yet, but I'm always on the lookout for artists. Come visit me, if you'd like. :-) I'm a new follower.

    1. Thanks for the follow Mare! I've only done one book cover before (for a nonfiction book about birds), but it might be fun to do one sometime :)
